Welcome to the Survive and Thrive Series

If you're a new teacher, or just need some advice to start a new year, welcome. I'm so glad you're here.

Starting your teaching career can be exciting, overwhelming, inspiring, and exhausting all at the same time. One minute you're dreaming about bulletin boards and lesson plans, and the next you're wondering how you're supposed to remember twenty*five student names, learn a new curriculum, and figure out where the copier paper is kept.

Trust me, we've all been there.

When I walked into my first classroom, I quickly realized that while college had taught me a lot, there were still so many things I needed to learn. Some lessons came through experience. Others came from the incredible teachers who were willing to answer my questions, share their wisdom, and help me navigate those first few years.

Over the past 30+ years, I've taught in multiple grade levels, worked in different types of schools, served as an instructional coach, and spent the last several years in special education. Through all those experiences, I've learned that new teachers don't need perfection. They need practical advice, encouragement, and someone to tell them, "You've got this."

That's exactly why I wrote Survive and Thrive: A New Teacher's Guide to the K-2 Classroom.

This blog series is an extension of that book. In each post, I'll share tips, lessons I've learned, and simple strategies that can help make your teaching journey a little smoother. You'll get a glimpse into the topics covered in the book, along with ideas you can start using right away.

We'll talk about things like:
• What to focus on before the first day of school
• Creating routines that actually work
• Building strong relationships with students and families
• Working with support staff
• Managing behavior with confidence
• Staying organized without spending hours every night planning

Most importantly, we’ll explore how to become the teacher you aspire to be, knowing that nobody has everything figured out on day one. This is the kind of honest advice an experienced teacher next door would offer if she were not busy doing her best to keep all the plates spinning too.

If you're looking for a practical guide filled with real classroom experience, helpful checklists, and honest advice from someone who has been in your shoes, I'd love for you to check out Survive and Thrive: A New Teacher's Guide to the K-2 Classroom.
